Hello from Shuswap Denture Centre!
One of the most common questions we hear is: “Will I ever be able to eat my favorite foods again?” It’s a great question, and today, we’re giving you the honest answer.
The Short Answer: Yes, but with a few conditions!
1. The “Two-Year” Rule
If your dentures are less than two years old and were custom-fitted by a professional, you can enjoy a very normal diet. However, keep in mind that your mouth changes over time. After about two years, dentures often start to feel “loose” because of natural changes in your gums and jawbone. If this happens, it’s time for a Reline to restore that perfect, secure fit.
2. Patience is Key for New Smiles
Whether it’s your very first set of dentures or a brand-new replacement, your mouth needs an “adjustment period.” Think of it like training for a sport—your gums and facial muscles need time to get stronger and adapt to the new appliance. This usually takes about one month.
3. Start Small, Dream Big
In the beginning, we recommend starting with:
-
- Warm soups
-
- Soft foods (like mashed potatoes or yogurt)
-
- Small, bite-sized pieces
As you build your confidence and “muscle memory,” you can gradually move to tougher foods.

Once you are fully adjusted and your dentures fit correctly, nothing is off the menu—not even steak!
